Rodzina, the eponymous heroine of Karen Cushman's historical novel, is a big, angry, chunky, homely Polish-American orphan. Tho she lo and is sure no one could possibly want to adopt her except to exploit her as a virtual slave.3/5.

Rodzina Clara Jadwiga Anastazya Brodski is the new face in Karen Cushman’s gallery of unforgettable heroines. One of a group of orphans, year-old Rodzina boards a train on a cold day in March She’s reluctant to leave Chicago, the only home she can remember, and she knows /5(15).

Rodzina is a 12 year old orphan living in Chicago when she is forced to board an Orphan Train headed west. As one of the oldest girls on the train, she becomes like a big sister to the younger ones: Joe and Sammy (Joe aint my brother!), whiny green-eyed Gertie, and the loveably gullible Lacey/5.

The story of Rodzina, as she grows from grouchy and sad to a more hopeful and independent girl is one that evolves, as she faces two women who want her for her labor, and later, a man who wants her to replace his dying wife.

This is my favorite kind of book -- spunky characters, fun to read, and along the way I learn something!/5(22). In the tradition of Lucy Whipple, Catherine Called Birdy, and Matilda Bone, Rodzina is another example of a strong girl making sense of her desperate situation. This book is perfect for children in grades four through nine, and for fans of children's literature no matter what age.

Karen Cushman is a gifted storyteller/5(22). Rodzina book. Rodzina Clara Jadwiga Anastazya Brodski, a strong and stubborn Polish orphan, leaves Chicago on an orphan train, expecting to be adopted and turned into a slave—or worse, not to be adopted at all. As the train rattles westward, she begins to develop attachments to her fellow travelers, even the frosty orphan guardian, and to believe that there might be good.

This is a wonderful book. Big, grouchy Rodzina is a character with great appeal, vulnerable, strong, and funny. Her bleak situation makes for good suspense and real shudders, since we know that many orphan children actually did find themselves sent out West on trains with the (often unfounded) hope that they'd be adopted by decent families.5/5(5).

Narrator Rodzina Cara Jadwiga Anastazya Brodski (who is "big for twelve and every day getting bigger"), starts out with 22 other orphaned children in. "Rodzina's musings and observations provide poignancy, humor, and a keen sense of the human and topographical landscape." (School Library Journal) "A natural for American history or social studies classes, this is especially interesting as a women's history title, with Rodzina portrayed as an unromantic protagonist, big, angry, tough.

"Rodzina is prickly, stubborn, and heart-sore but she's also honest, likable and smart Enough unpredictability to nicely unsettle expectations." THE HORN BOOK Horn Book "[Cushman's] choice of subjects is always excellent a delightful, thoroughly Polish, heroine." NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW The New York Times Book Review.

Young, self-reliant, resilient Rodzina (from the Polish for “family”) Brodski is an orphan at age 12 in the winter of —her father, mother, and young brothers all dead. She is gathered up in Chicago with other orphans and street children and sent west on one of the “orphan trains” that took children to be placed out on the farms and in the towns of the prairies.

Imagine yourself as a twelve-year-old orphan inwho is being put on the "Orphan Train" and sent out West to be adopted by some family along the way. She has no certainty of being adopted, and, in fact, this young lady, Rodzina Clara Jadwiga, does not trust anything about this journey she is undertaking.

As the train makes stop after stop she watches others being chosen. Home is where the art is in Jan P. Matuszynski's The Last Family (Ostatnia Rodzina), a dutiful and respectful chronicle of the last 28 years in the life of Poland's foremost apocalyptic surrealist.Rodzina is about the search for a family, and while Rodzina was not my great-grandmother's name, it was the perfect name for the girl in my story.

And so she is Rodzina. And so she is Rodzina. I would like to dedicate this book to my family—the Czerwinskis, the Cushmans, and the Lipskis, who were kings in Poland.
